Scorpions Development At Philip Wokorach Tag Rugby Tournament
Scorpions RFC, through its community development arm, recently utilized funds raised from a successful Christmas fundraising event to support the participation of under 10 and 13 teams in the Philip Wokorach Tag Rugby Tournament. The tournament took place at Kyadondo Rugby Club on New Year’s eve. Comprising children from development projects in Naguru and Bujuuko, these talented young players were coached by Scorpions' dedicated development officer, Atibu Saidi. Saidi was assisted by senior players turned coaches Olenge Ochan, Brian and Michael Kalyango. We express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to the fundraising event and extend special thanks to the Scorpions' chairperson Peadar O’Murchu for arranging jerseys, transportation, and nourishment. Both teams displayed remarkable teamwork, rugby values, and made an impressive journey to the quarter-finals.
The Scorpions' community development arm strives to empower youth by providing them with opportunities to participate in sports and develop essential life skills. The Philip Wokorach Tag Rugby Tournament served as a platform for young talents to showcase their abilities, while also fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship among the participating teams.
Both the under 10 and 13 teams showcased incredible talent, determination, and adherence to rugby values throughout the tournament. Their remarkable journey to the quarter-finals is a testament to their hard work, coaching support and the unwavering team spirit they displayed on the field.
The excitement reached new heights as the young players had the opportunity to meet Ugandan rugby star, Philip Wokorach, on the day of the tournament. Their faces lit up with joy as they interacted with their role model, who took the time to inspire and motivate the aspiring rugby players. This special encounter with a local rugby hero left an indelible mark on the children, further fueling their passion for the sport and instilling in them a belief that dreams can indeed become a reality. We hope that in the not to distant future we may see some of these young children follow in Philips footsteps and play for the Ugandan national side.
This initiative was a joint venture between the Scorpions and Rhinos Athletics club. The positive results will no doubt lead to a fruitful collaboration on developing Ugandan rugby youth going forward.
The Scorpions RFC's community development arm remains committed to empowering youth and providing opportunities for their growth through rugby. As we continue on this path of nurturing talent and promoting rugby values, we are inspired by the dedication and spirit displayed by these young athletes and look forward to their continued success.
