Tanzania to field First side in 16 years
Scorpions and the TRU are jointly announcing a big upcoming fixture.
This July, Tanzania will be fielding a 1st National Development XV since 2007 against international touring opposition from Ireland.
Our efforts to offer a higher standard of rugby for players in East Africa to develop are ongoing. We have approached several successful clubs in Europe inviting them to come and play exhibition games in East Africa.
One of those, Railway Union RFC in Ireland have agreed to make the journey to Tanzania and provide the opposition for Tanzania’s first game.
Players from clubs across the country have been identified and will be travelling to Zanzibar where they will go through an intense training camp with international coaches that we have hand selected, to help prepare them for Tanzania’s return to international competition.
Our strategic partner organisation NGE Maendeleo have agreed to sponsor the entire camp costs for the National team. Safari Lager have also agreed to come on board as a sponsor for the event and will help with camp logistics and provision of national team jerseys.
TRU President, Jacob Karulama
“We are delighted to start going back to where we were previously, we want to have a strong comeback (to international competition).
Tanzania has been out of International rugby for a long time. The last time we played was in 2007. We are prepared to do everything we must to get Tanzania back competing like the good old days.
We have already selected 30 provisional team members for our game against the Railway Union they will be unveiled in the coming weeks.”
The game will take place at Mao Zedong Stadium in Zanzibar on the 27th July.
Huge congratulations to everyone involved in organising and all of the African Scorpions members who have been working tirelessly in the background on the logistics.
